 Odyssey of the Mind
Regional Competition

On Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, five teams from the Andrews’ Schools participated in the Western Region North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind competition at Enka High School.  Andrews Elementary School sent two teams .  The teams had been preparing for the competition for months and Saturday was a wonderful culmination of all their hard work.  Each team is to be commended for their perseverance and creativity.

Andrews Elementary Hide & Seek Team:  This team of K-2nd graders took home their trophy for participating in the Primary division.  The team created a device that raised a team-decorated containers to uncover three surprise objects that were 5, 8, and 10 feet away. Their performance integrated raising the containers and the surprise objects into its theme which also included a narrator character and a setting that underwent a change at the end to send a message to the audience.

Team members: Hailey Fonda, Dyanna Holloway, Aleah Brown, Cayla Postell, Mackenzie Stalcup (other members unable to attend competition : Jeffrey Burke, Francis Nguyen)

Coaches: Leisa Fonda, Kim Holloway

Andrews Elementary Odyssey Angels Team:  This team of 4th and 5th graders brought home the 1st Place trophy and will continue on to the state competition.  The team’s problem was to create and present an original performance where a group of students travel through team-created places encountering negative situations that they turn into positive ones. These “Odyssey Angels” help two characters with different problems, and they help save an entire community from a bad situation. One Odyssey Angel could not speak, and another had to have a special power.

Team members: Rosabella Debty, Magnus Fonda, Savannah Horton, Meraiah Hunsucker, Austin Malin, D.J.Wytovak

Coach:  Betsy Garrett

 Dr. Seuss' Birthday
 Celebrations
"Things 1 and 2 littered the hallways and were pursued from room to room by a large cat wearing a striped hat.  Oh, the places they went and excited faces they saw! The word is that even Mrs. Higdon lost her cool and chased them away with a pillow, as her students cheered her on.  And, just when we thought the mischief had ended, a few children in the media center were heard attempting to coax the Cat and Company back inside, by gently calling, "Here kitty, kitty!"
What a fun-filled week... Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!"

Brain facts

  • The largest part of the human brain is called the cerebrum. Other important parts include corpus callosum, cerebral cortex, thalamus, cerebellum, hypothalamus, hippocampus and brain stem.

The second largest part of the brain is the cerebellum, which sits beneath the back of the cerebrum. It is responsible for coordinating muscle movement and controlling our balance. Consisting of both grey and white matter, the cerebellum transmits information to the spinal cord and other parts of the brain.
